They Obeyed Orders
John J. Dunphy
This scifaiku haibun appears in the May 2022 edition of Scifaikuest.
For five years I attended a top-secret training program held at a CIA black-ops site. The physical and mental conditioning were intense. We also underwent experimental surgeries that included implants.
One day we were fitted with parachutes and taken up in an airplane. When the plane reached 10,000 feet, we were pushed out the door after being told not to pull our parachute cords. No explanation was given.
The iron discipline to which we had been subjected compelled me to obey what common sense indicated was a suicidal order for a few moments. Then panic kicked in and I pulled my cord, as did quite a few others.
The deeper panic of those in free fall, however, must have triggered an implant.
